King Restaurant & Bar on Kapiolani Boulevard serves up authentic Cantonese-style Chinese food with a focus on family-friendly dining. The setting is straightforward and unpretentious, leaning more toward practical comfort than polished elegance—a place where locals stop in for hearty meals without fuss. It’s a moderately sized space, fitting for casual get-togethers, and the parking around back makes it convenient for those driving in from nearby neighborhoods.

The restaurant’s strength lies in its extensive menu that highlights classic Cantonese dishes like roast duck, steamed whole fish, and dim sum offerings including siu mai and xiaolongbao. Many diners come specifically for their roasted duck and salt & pepper chicken wings, both of which get positive nods for being fresh and well-seasoned. The menu also features a diverse range of soups and clay pot specialties, which provide warming options especially appealing on cooler days or for those seeking something homestyle and comforting.

This is a place that caters well to families and groups craving uncomplicated but authentic Chinese flavors, with a pace that tends toward prompt service and reasonable prices. While the atmosphere is not particularly refined—some have mentioned the dining area is somewhat small—the focus remains on delivering familiar dishes without heavy-handed seasoning, appealing to those mindful of MSG and preferring fresher tastes.

Visitors might find the service steady, with staff generally attentive though occasionally variable depending on the shift. The restaurant stocks a modest selection of wines, making it easy to pair a drink for a relaxed meal. Lunch hours are popular, and there’s a sense that it works well for casual weekday meals or weekend dinners where the priority is comfort food rather than ambience.

For anyone interested in Cantonese cooking in Honolulu, King Restaurant & Bar offers reliable flavors in a no-frills setting. It’s well suited for local families, groups of friends, or even solo diners looking for generous portions and classic dishes such as beef chow fun, honey walnut prawns, and their salted fish fried rice. Those especially craving roast duck or barbecue would do well to call ahead, as these items can sometimes sell out quickly.

We decided to try the lunch special here and we were happy with what we got. For two people we had ordered more food than we could both eat but everything came out great. We thoroughly enjoyed everything. The only downside was the fact that they ran out of noodles for the beef brisket we ordered but the look fun was still just as good. Although we didn't have any wine they also stock a pretty big inventory of it at reasonable prices so if you're looking to share a bottle or have one for yourself you can do it without breaking the bank. Overall I would come back here for lunch.

The parking for the restaurant is decent since parking is in the back of the restaurant. The dining area is a decent size and the decor is fine. The service was pretty good. The food was very good. Need to verify over the phone if duck or any other barbecue owns are available.

Great authentic Cantonese cuisine without loads of MSG. Good value, fast and friendly service. We ordered salt and pepper chicken wings, kau-yuk with preserved vegetables, clay pot eggplant with anchovies and chicken, sweet and sour pork, garlic pea shoots and scallop egg white fried rice. Every dish was fresh and well seasoned. They served a free coconut tapioca black rice dessert. The only minor imperfection is the noise level due to the bare floor and walls.

Place kinda small. Food is great. To bad they didn’t have the peeking duck was loooking coward to eating that. The cold ginger chicken is the best one I’ve eaten. Other dish was okay. Service was okay u till the regular server came to work. He was helpful. Didn’t get his name. I would eat there again. Price is okay like everything else price is going up.

Over all a good experience. Definitely would recommend. Coming from a picky eater because I grew up eating great food and am a cook myself. Food was over all good except for the vegetables dish (Ong Chai) was a bit hard. I think the noodles could have used a little bit more soy, was a bit toward bland side, I got some sharp tongue kids too, they thought it was a bit bland too. Service could have been better. Maybe because we try skipping the dinner crowd and it was also the worker’s dinner time. I think they realized they were a bit lacking in that aspect and try making up for it afterwards. I appreciated that. I would recommend this place for anyone interested in good chinese food. Over all a good experience!

Chinese restaurant along Kapiolani Avenue. The food is good but a little highly priced, we ordered the roasted pigeon and fried rice along with a bitter melon and beef stir fry. The garlic steamed oysters were delicious as well. I think due to the language barrier there was miscommunication and we weren't served one of our steamed fish dishes. All in all a good restaurant but be prepared to pay a high price tag on some of the foods.

Amazing food served here! Price is definitely fair and portion is relatively good size too. Ordered bbq roasted pork, the best sweet and sour pork, seafood soup and steamed fish fillet. Everything was prepared so well and all of us enjoyed the meal tremendously. Parking was a little challenging but luckily we could park on roadside after 730pm. I strongly recommended this place!

So much delicious Chinese food! We had mapo tofu, minced beef with rice, wonton soup, har gow, shrimp fun, and bbq buns. We enjoyed all of it, and the portions guaranteed leftovers for later. Very attentive staff kept us eating and drinking the entire time. We recommend for anyone wanting some tasty Chinese food!
